A Man, A Rock, and A Mountain: The State of Roy Jones

Posted by Jimmy Tobin on October 31, 2011 at 10:30pm 1 Comment

The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, when the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile hopeless labour.” Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus

Sisyphus was granted permission by Pluto to return to earth to chastise his wife. But when reacquainted with the pleasures of mortal existence, he refused to depart. After many years of ignoring the warnings…

Tyrann Mathieu for Heisman Campaign has come to a close

Posted by CalixSports on October 19, 2011 at 3:22pm 0 Comments

You know those "Honey Badger For Heisman" t-shirts that you bought at the game a couple weeks ago? Yeah, you can dispose of those now. Tyrann Mathieu was already facing an uphill battle by being on the defensive end of the ball, but writers definitely aren't going to vote for you if you miss action due to failing a drug test.

Tyrann Mathieu,Spencer Ware and Tharold Simon will all be suspended for the Auburn game on Saturday, and possibly even longer, for failing a drug test. Ware is LSU's leading rusher with 512 yards on 128 carries and 6 touchdowns. Defensive back Tharold Simon has 1 interception and 29 tackles for the Bengal Tigers this season. Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu's stats are already well chronicled and his loss will definitely be felt on the defensive side of the ball. It's too…

Top 10 Crazy Endings in Recent Boxing History

Posted by CalixSports on October 18, 2011 at 11:00am 0 Comments

On Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Chad Dawson literally tackled his way to a 2nd round TKO victory over light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins. An abrupt ending to a HBO Pay Per View title fight.

After Hopkins jumped on to Dawson as he leaned forward, Dawson threw Hopkins off of his back causing B Hop to hit the canvas elbow first. Hopkins grabbed his left shoulder in pain as the referee repeatedly asked him if he could continue. Hopkins pointed to his shoulder and signaled that he could not fight any longer, at which point referee Pat Russell signaled a halt to the bout in the 2nd round. The crowd booed relentlessly as Chad Dawson climbed the ring post and beat his chest as if he knocked Hopkins out. Dawson then proceeded to yell at Hopkins from across the ring as Hopkins… Continue

Bald White American Athletes, Urkel vs Screech, Husbands of the WNBA: Calix Answers Mail Pt.1

Posted by CalixSports on October 14, 2011 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

I'm notorious for not responding to my emails and messages. Here are just a few from the mailbox that I will respond to publicly. Here we go:

Message: Calix, love your channel. I like how you talk about being proud of being a bald white guy in America. That being said, who are your 3 favorite bald white american athletes? -Kicka226 via YouTube

Answer: Wow! I couldn't think of 3 bald white American athletes so I had to do a little research for this one. I give more credit right away for guys who accept their baldness and just shave it all the way off right away. There's no need to hide that bald spot with hats and…

Untangling the Web: Why Hopkins Made Dawson Wait

Posted by Jimmy Tobin on October 13, 2011 at 5:30pm 0 Comments

Insults, and insulting terms, tend to fluctuate in force. There was a period of time when being called a “square” was hurtful. In the early nineteen-eighties, prior to the demand for anti-discrimination and social justice education, calling someone a “fag” was a forceful yet acceptable way of drawing a person's sexual orientation—and thereby their masculinity—into question. “Square” has been relegated to the sepulchre of dead language, and “fag” is no longer acceptable, thanks to initiatives to rid our lexicon of hateful terminology.

Tyrann Mathieu for Heisman; By the way, what's a Honey Badger?

Posted by CalixSports on October 13, 2011 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

If there is a college football player in the country deserving of the nickname "Honey Badger", it's Tyrann Mathieu. What's a Honey Badger you ask? I once wondered this same thing until I fired up my trusty google machine and found some amazing videos of these creatures in action. Below is one of the videos I found on YouTube while doing research on the Honey Badger. These creatures were voted Most Fearless Animal in the World by The Guinness Book of World Records. You will see why in this video. Watch the Honey Badger as he gets stung by thousands of African Honey Bees and survives a venemous snake bite, still managing to go about his day. These creatures are small, aggressive and fearless. Remind you of someone?

LSU Sophomore cornerback Tyrann Mathieu isn't attacking Honey Bees and snakes, but he has been attacking his opposition on the football… Continue

Megatron is GREAT; but Randy Moss in his prime great?

Posted by CalixSports on October 12, 2011 at 2:26pm 1 Comment

In the words of rapping-boxing great Roy Jones; "Y'all musta forgot". It's a human tendency to compare every great athlete of today to great athletes of other eras. Even Scottie Pippen went as far as saying that Lebron James is better than Michael Jordan, and he still needs to be slapped and put in timeout for that comment. This epedimic is getting out of control and must be stopped.

The latest case of comparing a great athlete of today to a legend of yesterday is the Calvin Johnson to Randy Moss comparison. I've heard numerous talking heads making this comparison after Johnson's performance on Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears. On the surface this looks like a fair comparison, both are tall, physically imposing receivers with speed and great hands. However, numbers don't lie, and a look… Continue

Jeremy Shockey is a classless act; Jimmy Graham is THAT DUDE

Posted by CalixSports on October 11, 2011 at 2:27pm 0 Comments

"I never liked Jeremy Shockey. Not when he was with the Giants and not even when he was with the Saints." -Jim Henderson

Harsh words coming from a respected journalist who rarely calls players out on their transgressions. I completely agree with Jim Henderson on this issue. Jeremy Shockey has always been a tool both on and off of the field. He once again proved that on Saturday against his former team, the New Orleans Saints.

Carolina Panther tight end Jeremy Shockey had 3 receptions for 21 yards against the Saints on Sunday. On each of those 3 catches he acted as if he had just caught the game winning pass in the Super Bowl. He was also caught throwing up an obscene gesture to the Saints sideline after one of Carolina's touchdowns. He topped that off by running off the field after the game… Continue

Haye retires, Klitschko vs Mormeck, Kimbo back in action: Heavyweights Gone Wild

Posted by CalixSports on October 11, 2011 at 12:00pm 0 Comments

The heavyweight division is alive and better than ever. Hopefully you can smell the stinch of sarcasm dripping from the previous sentence. Wladimir Klitschko, Jean Marc Mormeck, Kimbo Slice and David Haye are all in the news cycle right now.

Wladimir Klitschko announced that he will be facing Jean Marc Mormeck on December 10 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Mormeck is 39 years old and boasts a 36-4 record. What qualifies him to fight for a heavyweight title against Klitschko you ask? Well, Mormeck is 3-0 as a heavyweight, with wins over tough opponents such as Vinny Maddalone, Fres Oquendo and Timur Ibragimov. No, not Sultan Ibragimov, Timur Ibragimov. Apparently beating 3 journeymen is enough to qualify you for a shot at The Heavyweight Title these days. My advice to Mr Mormeck is to run like the wind like David… Continue

Pick against Bernard Hopkins again; I dare you

Posted by CalixSports on October 10, 2011 at 8:00pm 0 Comments

I've picked against Bernard Hopkins several times over the past couple of years, I won't make that mistake again. I thought Antonio Tarver was going to be naturally too big for Hopkins at 175, I was wrong. I thought Pavlik was too young and too strong for the older Hopkins, especially after watching the Calzaghe fight, I was wrong. I thought Pascal would be too active for Hopkins and win a hometown decision, once again, I was wrong.

Bernard Hopkins continues to prove the boxing masses wrong. If history tells us anything, it tells us that Hopkins will prove the masses wrong once again.

Hopkins will face off against Chad Dawson this Saturday and once again many in the boxing public are favoring his younger opponent to knock him off. One can't help but notice the physical advantages that…
